Unfortunately, and perhaps inevitably, the other day I received a request from a lawyer representing Penguin Books asking me to take the theme down. A more detailed explanation is over at my blog if you feel like reading it.

I’ve removed the files for the theme code—so if you’re looking for a Penguin-eqsue design your best to look at Dave Cooper’s Panda Classics Recycled, the slightly tweaked and copyright-compliant version of this original theme. I’m going to leave this site as-is until asked to take it down as well.

Thanks to everyone who used and enjoyed the theme while it was out there, it was great while it lasted!

Just a quick note to say I’ve just updated the theme code to include a fix for centering images and some text-shadow jankiness in Safari 4. It’s available as version 1.2.1 of the theme.

I plan on getting around to improving the theme to take advantage of some of Tumblr’s new features and make it a one-click install from the Theme Garden. Need to find the time is all.

I’ve noticed quite a few people trying to integrate comments into the Penguin Classics theme and struggling with some layout issues. My theme code is a little crazy and certainly didn’t make it easy to integrate, so I’ve just spent a little time setting the theme up to work with Disqus.

I’ve tested it reasonably carefully, but there may be some quirks here and there. You can let me know in the comments if you come across something that needs attention — I’ll try and keep an eye on it.

To install, you’ll need download version 1.2 of the theme code, then sign up to Disqus and add a new blog. Once you’ve done that, you’ll need to replace the two instances of ##_REPLACE_ME_### (Lines 630 & 645) in the theme code with the Disqus subdomain you set up a second ago. So:

http://disqus.com/forums/##_REPLACE_ME_###/embed.js

Becomes:

http://disqus.com/forums/your_disqus_subdomain_here/embed.js

That should be all you need to do, at least I think that’s all you need to do. Most of the customisation you can do within Disqus should work, though I haven’t test it all yet.

You can still download the v1.1 theme if comments aren’t your thing, it’s identical, just with slightly less discussion.

Penguin Classics Tumblr Theme

This is a demo of the Penguin Classics theme for Tumblr, by Max Wheeler. It’s based — oddly enough — on the wonderful Penguin Classics books. To install, simply download this text file (v1.1), and do this:

Click the “Customize” button on your Dashboard. Click the “Theme” tab, and click “Use custom HTML”. This will bring up a text box with your current theme’s HTML code.

Then you just need to copy and paste the code from the text file into that text box and click ‘Save Changes’.

While the theme works in Internet Explorer, it doesn’t really capture the full experience. To see it as it was meant to be I recommend viewing it in Safari, though Firefox is also an ample substitute. Also, a few bugs/rendering issues will likely arise once/if people start using the theme, so please feel free to send me an email via max at makenosound dot com if you come across a problem. I’ll post any updates to the theme here, so you may want to follow this tumblelog for notification ease.

Update 27/3/2008:

I forgot to add in a style for ordered lists. My bad. It’s in there now though, so download v1.1 and you’ll be set.
